ABOUT WUROOD ART
I was born in Bagdad, Iraq in 1995, and there until 2012, when the situation became so dangerous that my family and I were forced to leave as refugees. First, we moved to Jordan, where I continued producing work and studying with Jordanian artists. As refugee in Jordan, I also spent my time volunteering as an art teacher with NGOs that worked to improve the living conditions of refugees.
In 2014, my family and I were given refugee status in the United States and were relocated to New Haven, Connecticut. Since arriving in the United States, I have spent my time volunteering at Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services (IRIS), working for the University of New Haven and studying at Gateway Community College. In my free time, I continue to paint and exhibit my art. Most recently, my art has been displayed at Quinnipiac University and the New Haven Museum.
Through my art, I hope to change the harmful and fear-mongering narratives about refugees. I also want to start a conversation about the hardships faced by women from communities where they are not allowed to speak up for themselves. I want my art to tell these stories and open people’s eyes to these experiences.
